The engine whistles, signalling the train departure. The wheels spring into action, you’re off for a unique journey in the heart of nature. The railway clings to the side of the cliff, and winds at a leisurely pace of 25 kilometres per hour through the narrow Doux gorge.
You arrive at Boucieu-le-Roi station. Cross the Pont du Roi bridge and enter this Village de Caractère (the designation recognisng its architectural heritage and stunning landscape). On your walk, you go past the Saint Jean l’Evangéliste (Saint John the Evangelist) church and charming Maison du Bailli (formerly a bailiff’s court).
You’ll also find a delightful restaurant for lunch as a family and enjoy Ardèche specialities.
Back to the Boucieu-le-Roi station, to begin the Vélorail (involving pedal carriages on a closed railway line). Your climb aboard your pedal carriage for a 8-kilometre route over the high Doux valley.
This recreational circular crossing through the orchards offers magnificent views over the valley’s villages.
Get back on the tourist train to Tournon St Jean. It is the perfect time for a snack as you watch the scenery go by.
Locomotives built more than 100 years ago, with the gentle hiss of vapour, bridges and viaducts overlooking the river, the journey back in time continues until the very last minute.
Back to the start. You’ve come full circle. You get back en route to La Plage Fleurie, pleased with this original day with a change of scenery, a delight for all the family.
