Leave your family sleeping peacefully…The day will be both lovely and original.
Enjoy your breakfast as a family in the sunshine, before, all together, leaping back 36,000 years to the origins of art! Remember to slip a gilet into your bag as it will be cold underground…
You arrive at the Chauvet cave, the oldest evidence of art in the history of mankind, discovered in 1994 and registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014.
A minor detail: for preservation reasons, you’ll not be visiting the actual cave, but a replica reproducing exactly the frescos, walls, floor, ceilings and archaeological remains of the original cave.
On-site, a restaurant open every day of the year accommodates you, without having to book, for a family lunch on the panoramic terrace. The chance for children and adults alike to swap their impressions about the hundreds of animals painted in red ochre, engraved in flint or produced with handprints.
You’ll make the most of this to teach your children the mnemonic to tell a stalactite from a stalagmite (helpful aide-memoire: a stalacTite Tumbles a stalagMite Moves upwards)!
During the school holidays and weekends, from March to October, an educational centre accommodates intrigued explorers in the cave workshop unique of its kind, where they can try wall art by drawing on the walls.
Outside, a Palaeolithic encampment offers demonstration and experimental workshops to tackle the ways of life and know-how of our prehistoric ancestors.
Back to the campsite for a gourmet snack and a debrief on today, like no other, which will have answered everyone’s numerous questions as to who our prehistoric ancestors were, where they came from and how they lived.
Whilst the children flick through comic or illustrated books on wall art discovered at the attraction’s bookshop, you relax over a glass of wine, whilst admiring the sunset.
Breathe in, breathe out, get your breath back, relax, make the most of it…you’re on holiday…
